Institute of Power Transmission and High Voltage Technology (IEH)

At the IEH, scientists do research in the fields of Smart Power Grids, High Voltage Engineering and Electromagnetic Compatibility.

Smart Power Grids

In this research area new methods, concepts and procedures are developed for the analysis, operation and design of the future decentralized power system with large shares of renewable energies (smart grids).

High Voltage Engineering

At our institute we develop and improve measurement techniques for the measurement of high amplitude impulse voltages and transient electromagnetic fields. In another area we develop and improve diagnostic tools, which are needed for monitoring electric power networks and for prediction of the overload capacity and residual life time of a H.V. apparatus. Furthermore the scientists explore thermal behavior of insulating materials in transformers.

The institute is part of University Transformer Research Alliance (UTRA), which fosters research activities on power transformer between international universities and industrial partners.

Electromagnetic Compatibility

The research field of Electromagnetic Compatibility consists of automotive EMC and EMC of automotive electric power networks. The goal is to detect and classify new impulsive disturbances and also to develop new measurement tools for a convenient recording of these impulses in the automotive power network with as less coupling disturbances as possible.
