Hon.-Prof. Dr. Techn. Dr.-Ing. habil. Konstantin Papailiou is a lecturer at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Stuttgart on the subject of high-voltage overhead lines. On 27 August 2024, he was elected President of CIGRE. Papailiou is a recognized expert in the field of electrical power transmission and has had a long career in the energy industry. His election as President of CIGRE reflects his significant contributions and commitment to the organization. We are very pleased to have such an important figure among our colleagues and congratulate him on his new role.
As President of CIGRE, Mr. Papailiou will play a central role in setting the strategic direction of the organization and further promoting international knowledge sharing in the power industry. His expertise and leadership are expected to help strengthen CIGRE's work at a time of ongoing changes in the power sector, particularly in light of the challenges and opportunities presented by the transition to sustainable energy and smart grids.
CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électriques) is an international technical organization focused on the field of energy transmission and distribution. Founded in Paris in 1921, the organization is the world's leading platform for the exchange of knowledge and expertise in the field of electrical power systems.
CIGRE brings together professionals from across the energy industry, including engineers, researchers, grid operators, manufacturers and academia, to discuss technical and scientific issues related to power grids. The aim is to improve the operation, maintenance and expansion of energy transmission and distribution systems to ensure a reliable and efficient supply of electricity.
The organization is divided into 16 study committees, each focusing on specific topics, such as grid planning, system technology, protection technology, transformers and renewable energies. CIGRE regularly organizes conferences, workshops and publications to promote knowledge sharing and develop innovative solutions. The largest CIGRE event is the CIGRE Session, which takes place in Paris every two years and at which Papailiou was elected president.
